Subsistence hunting and fishing are major sources of food that the Yup'ik people depend upon to survive. The Yup'iks are also known for their artistic expressions such as drumming, dancing, story-telling and carvings ranging from elaborate dance masks to delicate ivory figures.
The Yup'ik Eskimo people of the Southwest are Alaska's largest Native group. The word Yup'ik means "real person". Over half speak their Native language (Yup'ik) as a first language.
Most villages are either along the coast or along rivers. Village conditions can be quite "primitive" with some homes without plumbing. The primary means of transportation in the village is the ATV or snowmobile.
